The hunter gatherers, also known as paleolithic people came to the americas about 40,000 thousand years ago. Many people left during the last of the great ice ages. After the ice glaciers melted the americans were not allowed to develope cities anywhere else. overtime, people settled into their own groups and created different cultures and languages.

-Mayans: The Maya built most of their cities between AD 250 and . In honor of the gods and rulers, they built stone pyramids, temples, and palaces. They also had stone carvings, were nicely decorated and bright colors.
-Toltecs: The Toltec formed another urban civilization. An early Toltec leader established a capital at Tula. Tula had pyramids and temples, but was differnt from other cities. The art or tula and architecture showed the militaristic nature of its inhabitants.
-Olmecs: The people who built the first large towns in Mesoamerica were the Olmecs. They lived on the lowlands along the Gulf coast of southern Mexico from about 1200 BC to AD 300 where it was hot and humid. they contained a large pyramid, a courtyard, and eight giant stone heads and several other monuments that looked like thrones.
-Zapotec: One later Mesoamerican people that may have had contact with the Olmec were the Zapotec. The Zapotec lived in southern Mexico from about 1500 BC to AD 750. They were origanlly farmers, but they went on to build a capital city. The city was named Monte Albán and it became the first true city in Mesoamerica. Zapotec also had pyramids, temples and palaces. There was also a large ball court and an observatory with fifteen residential neighbors. Everyone had their own plaza.
